What is Your Peak?
On September 25, 2023, I ventured out on another great adventure. I trained for over six months to take on the Grand Canyon’s 24-mile Rim to Rim trail in one day. With substantial temperature swings, challenging terrain, and 11,000 feet in elevation change, this trail is rated by many as one of the most difficult hikes in the United States. Despite minimal hiking experience, I eagerly took on the challenge. I took the hike seriously and prepared diligently. With a little blood, a lot of sweat, and one silent tear of relief, I completed the hike in 17 hours. Coming out of that canyon was truly a mountaintop experience.
The Grand Canyon was beautiful but also very intimidating and unforgiving at times. I enjoyed most of the hike immensely but also had my share of “why am I doing this?” moments. As I navigated the breathtaking yet strenuous trail, I realized that the peak I was striving for was not just a physical summit but a personal one. My personal peak isn’t a destination; it’s not even about the heights I can reach. Instead, my peak is about the lengths I can stretch myself to inspire others to set and achieve their goals. There are so many things that serve as obstacles standing in our way of reaching our potential. While many obstacles are immovable mountains in our lives, nine times out of ten, they are not unscalable. For me, on this challenge, each step I took was a step towards overcoming the invisible mountains that my perception of age and physical limitations had erected. The Rim to Rim hike was not just a check on my bucket list. Instead of drawing a line through it after completion, I underlined it. Every aching muscle and panting breath under the glaring sun was a reminder of the human potential to conquer, flourish, and refine personal boundaries. The Rim to Rim experience will forever remind me that life continues to offer opportunities for growth, adventure, and inspiration if we are willing to step out of our comfort zone and face the challenges and fears head-on.

Each day offers a new trial, leading to a horizon filled with peaks that only you can define. I urge you to keep seeking those peaks.
